Elephant Habitat (2023)

This map, published Liang Wanmei in 2023, shows the main elephant populations in Asia and Africa.

There are still three species of elephants living in the world, one of which, the Asian elephant, is divided into three subspecies. This map shows them all in different colours:

  • African savannah elephant, in purple.
  • African forest elephant, in red.
  • Sri Lankan elephant, in pink.
  • Indian elephant, in orange.
  • Sumatran elephant, in yellow.

African and Asian elephants are considered to belong to two different genera, both within the elephant family.
