This map, created by Nikolaus Freeman in 2013, was published online Endonym Map.

The map lists the endonyms of the various countries around the world, that is, the names by which each state refers to itself in its official language or the most widely spoken language. Where a country has several official languages, the map shows the one used by the majority of the population. The result is a picture in which all the world’s languages coexist: Russia appears as Российская Федерация, China as 中华人民共和国, Greece as Ελληνική Δημοκρατία, Egypt as جمهورية مصر العربية and Ethiopia as ኢትዮጵያ.

The four corners of the map also show the geographical spread of the languages spoken in the most countries: English (top left), Arabic (top right), Spanish (bottom left) and French (bottom right).

The map includes territories situated far from the metropolis, whether or not they form an integral part of the country. Similarly, it also includes countries whose sovereignty is disputed or not recognised internationally, such as Somaliland, Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and Transnistria.
