Map of Naples (1930)

This map, published by De Agostini, shows the city of Naples in 1930. This particular copy is currently held at the National Library of France.

The map shows the importance of the railway for the city. The Central Station, in the eastern part of the city, next to Piazza Garibaldi, had been the hub for all connections with the rest of Italy since its inauguration in 1867. Shortly before this map was published in 1925, a second station was opened in the western part of the city, Mergellina Station, which was connected to the Central Station and provided connections to the north of the country. The tunnels that were created are shown on the map with a dotted black line.

In that year, the city of Naples already had around 850,000 inhabitants, more than large cities such as Madrid, Rome or Istanbul.
