This illustration, created by Terence Teo in 2023, shows the lighthouses of Spain. To do this, the author has extracted the data available at OpenStreetMap as of 2023.
To highlight the land and sea contours, Terence depicts lighthouses as points of light that shine only towards the sea. Thanks to this, the mere representation of the lighthouses makes it easy to delineate all coastal areas, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
What may surprise many is the lighthouses found on some islands and rocks that are difficult to access:
- Lighthouse on the Columbretes Islands, between Castellón and the Balearic Islands.
- Alborán Island lighthouse, between Almería and Melilla.
- Lighthouse on the Chafarinas Islands, east of Melilla.
- Peñón de Vélez la Gomera lighthouse, between Ceuta and Melilla.
Another little-known lighthouse is the Peñón de Alhucemas, between Peñón de Vélez la Gomera and Melilla, but it does not appear on the map as it is not in the OpenStreetMap database.
