This map of the city of Guadalajara was published in 1800 as part of a facsimile. At that time, Mexico was not yet independent, and Guadalajara was the capital of the Kingdom of New Galicia, one of the administrative units of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
The population of Guadalajara around 1800 was around 25,000, making it one of the largest cities of the time, although far from the 175,000 inhabitants of Mexico City, according to the 1790 census.
The urban layout of the city was already organised, although the eastern part of the city still crossed the San Juan de Dios River. This river was buried in 1909 and its route was replaced by Calzada Independencia, one of Guadalajara's main avenues.
As a curious fact, the map is oriented with west at the top.
