This map was published by Mathew Carey in 1818 as part of the Carey's General Atlas (General Atlas of Carey).

This map shows part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, which at that time was still part of the Spanish Empire, labelled as Mexico or New Spain. More specifically, it shows the Kingdom of Mexico, the Kingdom of New Galicia, the Captaincy General of Guatemala, the Captaincy General of Yucatán and part of the Internal Provinces of the East and West.

Carey's map is much less accurate in terms of territorial organisation than many other maps published at the same time, although it does show the twelve provinces created by Charles III in 1786: Mexico, Puebla, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Valladolid, San Luis Potosí, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Durango, Zacatecas, Arizpe-Sonora and Mérida.
