This map, drawn up by Gabriel Pradal Ruiz in 1897, shows the city of Almería with its port.
By the end of the 19th century, Almería had already been the provincial capital for several decades, which was reflected in its population growth, rising from 17,800 inhabitants in 1842 to 46,400 in 1897, the year in which this map was made. This is reflected in the expansion of the city, which was further enhanced by the demolition of the city walls in 1855.
Unlike other cities such as Madrid o Bilbao, In Almería, there was no general expansion plan, but rather multiple expansions were carried out using different strategies. This map by Pradal Ruiz shows the new extensions that had already been planned for the city next to the bullring and in the new area where the new railway station had been built in 1895.
The port area, at the bottom, in addition to the two breakwaters, Poniente and Levante, also shows the barometric levels which, when interpreted correctly, allow navigation over shallow waters.
