Political map of Europe (1648)

This detailed map, created in 2023 by Gustav Ståhlberg, shows the political situation in Europe in 1648.

This map shows Europe after the Peace of Westphalia, signed on 24 October 1648. This treaty ended the Eighty Years' War, with the Netherlands gaining recognition of its independence from the Spanish Empire. It also ended the Thirty Years' War, giving the Swedish Empire and the Kingdom of France a favourable position in Europe. The Ottoman Empire was still an important player in Europe, where it was at odds with the Republic of Venice, although it failed to conquer any important strongholds.

The map shows the Holy Roman Empire, marked with a red line, which at that time was under the rule of Emperor Ferdinand III of Habsburg.
