Political map of Europe (1789)

This detailed map, created in 2024 by Gustav Ståhlberg, shows the political situation in Europe in 1789.

The French Revolution is about to erupt, due to multiple economic, social and political reasons. In the Baltic Sea, the Russo-Swedish War has broken out, with Gustav III of Sweden seeking to conquer St. Petersburg and end the interference of the Russian Empire, achieving only the latter. In the south, the Ottoman Empire faces the Habsburg Empire and the Russian Empire, having already lost Moldavia.

The map shows the Holy Roman Empire, marked with a red line, which at that time was under the rule of Emperor Joseph II.
