Where is Syldavia? (2018)

This map, created by Anders Kvernberg In 2018, assess the possible situation of the kingdom of Syldavia.

Syldavia is a small fictional kingdom that appears repeatedly in five books by The Adventures of Tintin, by Belgian author Hergé. In this map, Anders evaluates the data available on the description of the kingdom in the map on the left:

  • A Germanic language is spoken.: The entire territory where a Germanic language was spoken in 1939 is shown in light red.
  • It has a port city. For this reason, it places the Danube, the largest navigable river in the region, in blue.
  • There are several ancient mosques. In green, regions with a Muslim presence of more than 25% of the population.
  • There are pelicans. The black line marks the boundary of the pelicans' habitat.
  • There are mineral water springs.: Blue dots indicate locations where mineral water springs are commercially exploited.
  • It has uranium mines. All uranium mines in the region are marked with yellow circles.

The map on the right also shows possible inspirations that Hergé had for creating Syldavia. Among them, the spelling could be related to Poland, although the script (a mixture of Latin and Cyrillic letters) was something that occurred in the former Yugoslavia. The royal lineage, mentioned in a book, dates back to the first kings of Bohemia. Its name itself seems to be inspired by Transylvania and Moldavia.

As the author of the map himself points out, there is no place that fits the description of Syldavia, although it seems clear that it is an amalgamation of Eastern European countries.
