The races of Europe according to Madison Grant (1916)

This map, published by the American Madison Grant in 1916, was part of his book. The fall of the great race. Despite its racist and eugenicist content, the book enjoyed some popularity in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s.

The map, and the entire book, lacks scientific basis and is highly propagandistic. To begin with, he establishes an arbitrary division of races across Europe and asserts that the Nordic race, after losing its influence in the past, could regain it. According to the author's view, the Nordics had had to adapt to harsher winters, which would have been effective in eliminating the weakest and thus making them the superior race.

Grant's ideas were very well received in Nazi Germany, and even Adolf Hitler himself wrote a letter of thanks to the author for his ideas, referring to the book as «your bible».
