Map of Europe's culinary horrors (2013)

This map, created by Yanko Tsvetkov, can be found in the compilation Atlas of Prejudice, published in 2015.

This illustration shows some of the most popular culinary horrors from different European countries, some with a touch of sarcasm. Here are some translations from the map:

  • Iceland: Rotted shark (hákarl)
  • SwedenFermented herring (surströmming)
  • Portugal: Rice cooked in blood (cabidela).
  • SpainBull testicles (criadillas) and squid ink.
  • France: Pressed duck (duck cooked rare) and frog legs.
  • England and IrelandBlack pudding (similar to black pudding).
  • Turkey: Boiled animal heads (possibly referring to the jash).
  • BalkansTripe soup (with different regional varieties in countries such as Romania and Bulgaria).
  • ItalyHorse meat (very popular in different regions).
  • Switzerland: Nestlé.
