Europe according to the Spanish (2011)

This image groups together some of the most common prejudices of Spaniards when thinking about or referring to other European countries. Among the most prominent examples are:

  • Spain is labelled as Coffee for all, with a reference to Mecca by means of a star in Santiago de Compostela.
  • The Mediterranean Sea is named after Spanish sea.
  • Southern Italy, which was under the control of the Crown of Aragon more than 500 years ago, appears as a Eastern Catalonia.
  • For France, the author uses the appellative gabachos, one of the most common insults in Spain to refer to the French.
  • Germany bears the title of Merkel's Cruella, The German Chancellor's statement, in reference to the poor relations between Spain and the German Chancellor, was a reference to the bad relations that existed between Spain and the German Chancellor.
