The problem in Cuba (1895)

This satirical map was published by the magazine. Judge in 1895, three years before the start of the Spanish-American War.

In it, North America is depicted as Uncle Sam, staring intently at Cuba, which is personified as a fish. At the bottom are Uncle Sam's words: “I've been eyeing that snack for a long time. I guess I'll have to take it!”.

This moment refers to the beginning of the Cuban War of Independence, which would keep the mambises fighting against the Spanish presence on the island. Three years earlier, several media outlets, such as Revista Judge, sought to influence public opinion in order to facilitate intervention by the United States, which would finally come in 1898.
