The siege of Santiago de Cuba (1898)

This map of Santiago de Cuba was drawn up by Severo Gómez Núñez in 1898, during the Cuban War of Independence and the Spanish-American War.

The situation corresponds to the siege of Santiago de Cuba that took place between 3 July and 16 July 1898. The map shows the position of the Spanish army in red, defending its position within the city, and the positions of the American army in blue.

Each of the American positions lists the colonels and generals in command of each division. In addition, the map features topographical lines that help to better understand the attack and defence positions of each army.

In 1898, Santiago de Cuba was one of the most important cities on the island, with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Its surrender on 16 July was key to ending almost four years of war of independence in just a few weeks.
