Japanese pictorial map of the Middle East (1942)

This map, published by the Japanese publishing house Nobarasha (野ばら社) in 1942, shows the Middle East in the middle of the Second World War. This copy is currently held at the National Library of Australia.

Nobarasha is a publishing house founded in 1929 that has historically been linked to educational material. Therefore, it is possible that this pictorial map was part of Japanese propaganda aimed at schools.

The map depicts the situation of the war in the Middle East, showing the Empire of Japan occupying the entire Indian Ocean, which is historically questionable. British possessions are shown in red, although Egypt, which had been an independent kingdom since 1922, is erroneously included, with its flag appearing on the map. In India, the flag of the independence movement is also shown, even though India was still part of the British Empire at the time.
