The Middle East in the 13th century BC (2021)

This map, published by Simeon Netchev for World History Encyclopedia in 2021, shows the situation in the Middle East around 1300 BC.

The map shows the most important civilisations of this period in different colours, as well as their areas of influence in the same colour with stripes:

  • Hittite Empire, in green.
  • New Kingdom of Egypt, in purple.
  • Middle Assyrian Empire, in purple.
  • Babylon under the Kassite Dynasty, in dark green.
  • Kingdom of Elam, in pink.
  • Mycenaean civilisation, in red.

At this time, both the Hittite Empire and the New Kingdom of Egypt were seeking to expand their influence in the Mediterranean Levant, as shown on the map where both have vassals in the region. This would ultimately lead to several clashes, culminating in the Battle of Kadesh.
