Political map of Kiribati (2011)

This map of Kiribati was created in 201 by Peter Fitzgerald for Wikimedia Commons.

Kiribati is a country in Oceania made up of 32 atolls and one volcanic island. Despite being one of the smallest countries in the world, with an area of only 811 square kilometres, due to the scattered nature of its islands, it is the twelfth largest country in terms of exclusive economic zone (200 nautical miles from the coast).

This map shows the distribution of the various atolls in three main regions:

  • Gilbert Islands (in green), with 16 atolls. This region also includes the only island of volcanic origin, Banaba.
  • Phoenix Islands (in red), with 8 atolls.
  • Islands of La Línea or Equatorial Islands (in blue), with 8 atolls.
