Political map of Oceania (2017)

This map, created by Abel Gil Lobo for the website El Orden Mundial in 2017, shows the complex political map of Oceania, focusing on the microstates and archipelagos of the Pacific Ocean.

From a territorial point of view, Oceania is a continent unlike any other. Generally speaking, most people recognise Australia, New Zealand and then a handful of scattered islands. This map shows all the independent countries that make up some of these islands, as well as the islands that are still dependencies of other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, France and the United States.

The lines shown on the map represent the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) belonging to each country. These zones correspond to maritime regions in which a state has special rights to exploit and use marine resources. As defined by the United Nations, EEZs extend up to 200 nautical miles (370.4 kilometres) from a country's coastline.
