This map was published by J. M. Lago and C. F. Storer in 1898, the year in which Puerto Rico, along with Guam, Cuba, and the Philippines, became part of the United States and ceased to be part of Spain.
The map shows the main island of the territory, Puerto Rico, with the seven departments that were part of its administration (Aguadilla, Arecibo, Bayamón, Humacao, Guayama, Ponce, Mayagüez) along with the rest of the islands in the territory, the three main ones being Vieques, Culebra and Mona. The island of Mona is framed, as it is located 70 kilometres west of the main island.
The authors incorporated all kinds of political information into the map, so that all provincial capitals, cities, towns and villages are represented. It also shows the railway lines and roads that were in operation and those that were still under construction.
