This map was published by George W. Colton in his Atlas of the World in 1856.

The map shows the extent of Peru and Bolivia in the mid-19th century, when Bolivia still had access to the Pacific Ocean and Peru controlled the port city of Arica. After the War of the Pacific (1879–1884), which pitted Chile against Peru and Bolivia, the entire coastline from Arica southwards came under Chilean control.
