This map, created by the team of military officer Juan Ondara Lara, was published by J. H. Colton in 1859.
This is a large map, which is particularly important as it is the first scientific map of Bolivia. It reflects the survey carried out by Juan Ondara, Juan Mariano Mujía and Lucio Camacho between 1842 and 1858, and includes all the territory that belonged to Bolivia in the mid-19th century, before territorial losses which took place until the mid-20th century.
The map was commissioned by the Bolivian government from Colton, although the printing and publishing work was never compensated. Curiously, this caused serious financial problems for Colton, who had to sell part of his business to avoid bankruptcy.
