This map was published in 1915 as a result of the expedition led by Hiram Bingham and Yale University in 1911 that reached Machu Picchu. It is a topographical survey of much of the territory currently occupied by the department of Cusco, in Peru.
Machu Picchu was not discovered by this expedition, although it did produce the first photographic report that popularised the iconic Inca ruins. Bingham's photographs were also published. the first detailed close-up of Machu Picchu.
The blue areas shown on the map correspond to the area that was mapped as part of this expedition, including rivers, roads and settlements. Machu Picchu is located in the centre, although the location of the main cities in the region, such as Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, Quillabamba and Cusco, are also shown.
