Average age of European men at first marriage (2024)

This map, created by Landgeist in 2024, shows the average age of men at the time of their first marriage, according to data provided by Eurostat between 2021 and 2022.

The average age of marriage has been rising across Europe for decades. Part of this is due to the financial difficulties of becoming independent and starting a family, although another factor is that many couples decide to live together, and even have children, without getting married.

The highest ages correspond to Sweden (37.5), Norway (36.9), Spain (36.9) and France (36.0). At the lower end are Belarus (27.5), Turkey (28.0), Ukraine (28.0) and Macedonia (29.5). More broadly, lower percentages can be seen in the east and higher percentages in the west.
