Overview of the European Spring (1915)

This satirical map was published in 1915 by Lucas Gräfe.

This is a piece of propaganda published by the Central Powers (German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Ottoman Empire), in which enemy countries are depicted as naive and stupid:

  • France is caricatured as the standard-bearer of culture (literally with the word culture on the French flag), but unprotected in battle.
  • Russia is labelled as “a colossus with great ideas that has lost one of its hands and now simply rests on the lakes”, referring to how easy it was for the Central Powers to defeat the Russians in battle.
  • The United Kingdom appears to be a defenceless country without the help of its ally, Uncle Sam.
