The Age of the World's Borders (2018)

This map, created by Anders Kvernberg in 2018, shows the age of the world's borders.

To this end, the author has researched the first moment in which each of the borders was defined with its current layout, and has taken that date as a reference, even though some borders have disappeared and been re-formed since their creation.

The colours of the borders help to visualise the moment when they were established. The shade of the colours indicates shorter periods, most of them lasting 25 years:

  • Green: before 1700.
  • Yellow: during the 18th century
  • Orange: during the nineteenth century
  • Blue: during the 20th century
  • Purple: during the 21st century

Most of today's borders were first defined between 1875 and 1950, accounting for more than 70 per cent of the kilometres of national borders that exist today.

As indicated on the map, the oldest border in the world is the one surrounding the Principality of Andorra, whose 120 kilometres were established in 1278.
