This detailed map, created in 2023 by Gustav Ståhlberg, shows the political situation in Europe in the year 1444.
This moment comes after the defeat of the crusade against the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Varna on 10 November 1444. The Ottoman victory will be followed by further expansion in the Balkans. On the other side of the continent, England and France were engaged in the Hundred Years' War, although there was a period of calm following the Treaty of Tours in May 1444.
The map shows the Holy Roman Empire, marked with a red line, which at that time was under the rule of Emperor Frederick III.
