This map, published by Costa Rican Eduardo España, shows the symbols of Francoism that were still present in Spain.
The map is the result of research carried out by Eduardo España, who compiled information on all Francoist vestiges in Spain in 2021. All this data is grouped and presented on this map for each of the autonomous communities. To this end, the following elements are taken into account:
- Streets (brown rectangles).
- Coats of arms and reliefs (yellow stars).
- Inscriptions and gravestones (white rectangles).
- Plates (grey rectangles).
- Monuments and complexes (red crosses).
The Historical Memory Law, passed in Spain in 2007, provided, among other things, for the removal of Francoist symbols and figures from street names, commemorative plaques, monuments and the names of public institutions. This map also serves as a critique or propaganda in response to the slow implementation of this law in different municipalities.
In the lower left corner, the author also includes details about the Francoist figures who retain the most designations. In addition, he also states that 10% of all municipalities in Spain, 870, still retain some Francoist symbol.
