Oil and gas infrastructure in Iran (2025)

This map, created by Geopolitical Futures in 2025, shows Iran's oil and gas reserves.

This map shows the great strategic importance of the Persian Gulf for Iran. It is home to the world's largest gas field, shared between Qatar and Iran, from which Iran extracts 79% of its total production. In addition, the Persian Gulf is also home to the island of Kharg, where 90% of Iran's exported oil is extracted.

The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz can also be appreciated, both for Iran's trade and for the trade of the Gulf monarchies. It is estimated that 20% of the barrels of oil consumed worldwide currently pass through this strait.

At the bottom, you can also see a couple of bar charts showing that Iran currently has the third largest oil reserves in the world and the second largest gas reserves. In 2023, Iran's main trading partner for these hydrocarbons was China, which purchased more than 80% of its exports.
