This map, created by Nicolas Lambert, shows the location of all migrants who have died or disappeared while attempting to reach Europe.
In preparing this report, the author has used data provided by Missing Migrants Project between 2014 and 2023. The total number of migrants who have lost their lives or disappeared during this period worldwide amounts to a chilling 56,017.
On the map, the different circles show the location of the events and the size of the circle indicates the number of migrants involved in each one. The most serious incident, off the coast of Libya, took place on 18 April 2015 and claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people after the boat they were attempting to cross the Mediterranean in sank.
In its interactive version, which you can consult here, The coordinates can be changed to locate other hotspots, such as Central America and Southeast Asia, although none of them have a volume of events like the one on this map.
