Map of Christmas in Europe (2014)

This map, created by the illustrator Jakub Marian in 2014, shows the different ways of wishing someone a Merry Christmas in the various languages of Europe.

The different colours group together languages that share a common root in the way they say Merry Christmas. It is interesting to note how languages that, at first glance, seem to have little in common, such as the Romance languages and Turkish, or Romanian and Hungarian, do in fact share a common root for the word Christmas.
