Map of child marriage around the world (2019)

This map, created by Reddit user abu_doubleu, shows the prevalence of child marriage around the world. The author uses information available in the Human Development Report published by the UN in 2019 as the source of the data. The UN defines the prevalence of child marriage as the percentage of girls under the age of 18 who have been married.

The data for sub-Saharan Africa stands out, with Niger (76%), the Central African Republic (68%) and Chad (67%) leading the way. As aggregate regions, these are the ones with the highest prevalence:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa: 36%
  • South Asia: 29%
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: 25%
  • Arab States: 20%
