This map, created by Landgeist in 2023, shows the percentage of children born outside marriage or civil partnership in Europe, according to data provided by Eurostat between 2018 and 2022.

Marriage rates have fallen across Europe, which is why more and more people are choosing to become parents without being in a civil partnership or married beforehand. The map shows the percentage of births that occur when the parents are not in any kind of civil partnership.

The highest percentages correspond to Iceland (69.4%), France (63.5%), Portugal (60.0%) and Bulgaria (59.9%). At the lower end are Turkey (2.8%), Belarus (13.0%), North Macedonia (13.7%) and Greece (16.5%). More broadly, lower percentages can be seen in the east and higher percentages in the west.
