This map, published by Eurostat in 2024 with data from 2022, shows the fertility rate in Europe.
The fertility rate measures the number of children per woman of childbearing age. According to demographic studies, in countries with low infant mortality, such as Europe, the replacement rate is 2.1 children per woman. Currently, this number is far below that in all European countries for which Eurostat has data.
Malta (1.08), Spain (1.16) and Albania (1.21) are in the worst situation. At the opposite end of the scale are Georgia (1.83), France (1.79) and Romania (1.71).
