This map, created by Abel Gil Lobo for the website El Orden Mundial in 2019, shows the three possible ways of understanding Albania.
To this end, the three conceptions of Albania are drawn differently on the map:
- Albania, one of the 47 independent countries in Europe, which is what we commonly refer to as Albania.
- The Albanian people, understood as the entire territory populated by ethnic Albanians. This is shown on the map in red, indicating the areas where Albanians are the predominant ethnic group, and in pink, indicating the regions where they have a significant presence without being the majority population.
- Greater Albania, shown on the map with a dotted line. Greater Albania is the nationalist and irredentist idea of part of the Albanian people. It emerged after Albania's independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912 and has been a recurring theme among Albanian nationalist movements ever since.
Part of the reason why these three territories do not correspond arose with Albania's own independence. At that time, fearing that there would be a large Islamic state in Europe, the major European powers helped Serbia to gain more territory at the expense of what Albania could have had if the territory occupied by the Albanian people had been respected.
