Map of migration in Africa (2018)

This map, created by Abel Gil Lobo for the website El Orden Mundial, represents the major population migration routes within the African continent. It is based on 2015 data from the FAO and of the Leiden Centre for African Studies.

Of the 25 million Africans who leave their country each year, three quarters head for other countries on the continent. In absolute terms, the main destinations are some of the continent's major economic hubs, such as South Africa, Nigeria and Ethiopia. Even so, it is important to bear in mind that the main destination is usually a neighbouring country, both because of its economic cost and its cultural affinity.

The map shows the main routes by migrant volume marked with maroon arrows:

  • Burkina Faso to Ivory Coast.
  • Ivory Coast to Burkina Faso.
  • Sudan to South Sudan.
  • Somalia to Ethiopia.
  • Somalia to Kenya.
  • Mozambique to South Africa.
  • Zimbabwe to South Africa.
