The Highest Lands and the Deepest Trenches (2019)

This map, created by Peter Atwood in 2019, shows the highest places on the planet, as well as the deepest trenches.

Unlike traditional physical, relief or topographic maps, the author focuses solely on land masses that are more than 4,000 metres above sea level, shown in orange, and ocean floors that are more than 6,500 metres below sea level, shown in blue. As a result, the most extreme places on the planet are clearly highlighted.

Among the highlands, the Andes in South America and the Tibetan Plateau in Asia stand out, home to the highest mountains on the planet. The deepest trenches are found along the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, although the South Sandwich Trench and the Puerto Rico Trench can also be seen in the Atlantic Ocean.
