Countries with the highest water stress in 2050 (2024)

This map, published by Statista, shows countries around the world based on expected water stress in 2050, according to data from the World Resources Institute (WRI – World Resources Institute).

The concept of water stress represents the difficulty of obtaining sources of fresh water. Current measurements and future estimates by the WRI measure three types of use to calculate water stress: agriculture, industry, and domestic.

According to this map, it can be seen that the greatest water stress is concentrated in North Africa, South Africa and the Middle East, with four significant exceptions: Chile, Spain, Greece and India. In the case of Chile, Spain and Greece, the water stress projected for 2050 is higher than in countries with more historical problems such as Morocco or Egypt.
