Lands of legend, folklore and mythology (2015)

This map, created by Simon E. Davies, displays and groups together folklore and mythology from different regions of the world.

The group has been created based mainly on ethnolinguistic criteria, and for each criterion, the most popular animal, place, or folkloric or mythological object within the group has been chosen. Some of the most interesting ones are:

  • Romance: In south-western Europe, with the image of Romulus and Remus.
  • Germanic: In Central Europe, with the image of Thor, the god of thunder and strength.
  • Andean: In the Andean regions of Ecuador and Peru, with Pachamama.
  • Japanese: In Japan, with Jinmu Tennō, the legendary first emperor.
  • Mesopotamia: In present-day Iraq, with Lammasu, the protective god.
  • Semitic: In Arabia and the Mediterranean Levant, with the Genie.

Note: There was a earlier version of the map which the author withdrew and corrected with this new version, given the numerous errors in the grouping of different myths.
