Map of Hispaniola (1823)

This map, created by American cartographer Fielding Lucas Jr., appears in his 1823 atlas entitled A General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps of All the Known Countries in the World (General atlas with maps of all known countries in the world).

This particular map is dedicated to the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. It shows the historical division between the French colonial part in the west and the Spanish colonial part in the east.

Haiti, in the west of the island, had declared its independence from France in 1804. The Dominican Republic, in the east of the island, had done the same in 1821, but in 1822 it was invaded by the Haitian army. This change is not correctly reflected on the map, but in 1823 the island was de facto under the total control of Haiti.
