Map of Grenada (1823)

This map, created by American cartographer Fielding Lucas Jr., appears in his 1823 atlas entitled A General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps of All the Known Countries in the World (General atlas with maps of all known countries in the world).

Granada had been under French colonial rule until the end of the 18th century, when it passed into the hands of the British Empire with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. The map shows the administrative divisions of the island, although the cartographer still uses the terminology neighbourhoods, which had been transformed into parishes by the British prior to the publication of this map. The British did not change the boundaries of the six administrative divisions, they simply renamed them after the most important church in each region.
