Haiti and the Dominican Republic: one island, two worlds (2021)

This map, created by FairPolitics for the website Deciphering the War in 2021, shows the political division of Hispaniola between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share one of the borders with the greatest difference in quality of life. As the map shows, the GDP per capita of the Dominican Republic is almost seven times that of Haiti. Life expectancy in the Dominican Republic is more than ten years higher than in Haiti, and the literacy rate is 30 points higher.

For this reason, there is one of the largest flows of migrants between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with people leaving Haiti in search of better living conditions in their neighbouring country. As noted on the map, in 2021 the Dominican Republic proposed the construction of a border wall, which has progressed in recent years, with the aim of limiting this uncontrolled flow of people between the two countries.
