This map, created by Nicolas Lambert, shows the location of all migrants who have died or disappeared while attempting to reach the European Union.
This is an update of your map for 2023. In this new version, the period covered has been extended (from January 1993 to January 2025) and details about the cause of death of migrants have been added, with circles of different colours:
- Blue: Drowning (in the sea).
- Yellow: Suicide.
- Purple: Suffocation.
- Green: Exhaustion, hunger, thirst, or cold.
- OrangeArson, homicide, torture, police negligence or brutality.
- GreyPoisoning, mines, accidents, and others.
In preparing this report, the author has used data provided by various sources, such as Missing Migrants Project o UNITED for Intercultural Action.
Throughout this period, as shown on the map, more than 70,000 deaths have been recorded, most of which were due to drowning at sea. Over more than 30 years, these figures represent an average of 43 deaths per week.
