Legality of gender reassignment worldwide (2024)

This map, published by Our World in Data in 2024, shows the situation regarding gender reassignment in each country in the world, according to data from Equaldex.

On the map, each country's situation is represented by the following colours:

  • BlueLegal, without restrictions.
  • Dark greenLegal, but requires a medical diagnosis.
  • Light greenLegal, but requires surgery.
  • YellowIt varies between different regions of the country.
  • Orange: Ambiguous situation.
  • Red: Illegal.

There are significant discrepancies around the world, although some trends can be observed. In the Americas, it is legal without restrictions in most countries, although those that disagree opt for illegality (Venezuela, Paraguay, Nicaragua and Guatemala). In Europe, it is legal in the vast majority of countries, either without restrictions or with a medical report. In Africa, sex reassignment is illegal in almost all countries, while in Asia, legality prevails with the condition of surgery.

Among the first countries to legalise gender reassignment are Poland, Sweden and Singapore.
