Legality of cannabis in the United States (2023)

This map was published Ceren Dolma in 2023 as part of the initiative #30DayMapChallenge.

The illustration corresponds to a simplified version of the map of the United States, where each of the 52 states is represented by a hexagon of equal size, although with a relative position that attempts to approximate reality.

The different hexagons are painted in different colours to show the legal status of cannabis in each country (at the end of 2023):

  • In dark green, the states where cannabis is legal.
  • In light green, the states where the medicinal use of cannabis is permitted.
  • In light green with dark green lines, states where the medicinal use of cannabis is permitted and, in addition, other uses are decriminalised.
  • In orange, states where cannabis is illegal.
  • In orange with dark green stripes, states where cannabis is illegal but its use is decriminalised.
