This map was published in China in 1967 by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution. With this illustration, the movement sought to highlight how, in just one year, Mao Zedong's works had been translated into several languages and distributed throughout the world.
The Red Guards was a movement promoted by Mao Zedong among secondary school and university students, which later spread to other groups and areas of Chinese society. This particular map, which is propaganda in nature, is part of a collection that sought to extol the greatness of Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution beyond China's borders. To this end, the illustration depicts Mao in the centre of China and paints the entire country red, including Taiwan. A series of red lines radiate out from China across the entire world map.
The text in the top right-hand corner of the map, in Chinese, praises Mao's thinking and how important his contribution was: Mao Zedong Thought is Marxism-Leninism of an era in which nationalism was moving towards total domination and socialism towards world victory. Mao Zedong Thought is a powerful ideological weapon against imperialism, revisionism and dogmatism. Mao Zedong Thought shines red throughout the world.
In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, there is a longer text that provides some data on the internationalisation of the Cultural Revolution: Mao's works distributed by the China International Book Centre had been translated into 25 languages in just one year and, according to the publication, a total of 4.6 million copies had been sold. This is further exaggerated by other statistics that speak of works translated by other publishers into 65 languages that were available in 148 countries and regions around the world.
