Women's suffrage for success (1917)

This map, published by National Woman Suffrage Publishing Co., is part of a promotional brochure published in the United States in 1917 to promote women's suffrage and ensure that it was achieved in all states and in full.

The map marks and identifies the different states of Canada and the United States in different colours depending on the status of women's suffrage:

  • White: states with women's suffrage in all types of elections.
  • Dotted: states with women's suffrage only in presidential elections.
  • Crosses: states with women's suffrage only in primary elections.
  • Black: states without women's suffrage.

With persuasive intentions, the map aims to show how this had progressed further in Canada than in the United States and how this represents a success for Canadian society compared to American society. For this reason, the map is accompanied by a text that emphasises: How long will the Republic of the United States lag behind the Monarchy of Canada?
