This political-geographical infographic, designed by Nick Routley for Visual Capitalist in 2022, shows the Caucasus region.
In this region, historically a dividing line between Asia and Europe, the Russian republics of Chechnya and Dagestan lie to the north, and the independent countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to the south. All the borders are drawn on a satellite image showing the Greater Caucasus mountain range to the north and the Lesser Caucasus to the south. The infographic also includes labels showing the main cities and their populations.
The map also includes three territories which, in 2022, enjoyed limited international recognition, indicated by a dotted line. Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the two Georgian territories whose independence was recognised by Russia in 2008, and the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan.
The map was published a few weeks after the armed clash on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in September 2022, and a year before Azerbaijan regained control of Nagorno-Karabakh by military force in September 2023, bringing an end to the Republic of Artsakh.
