Railways of Spain and Portugal (1948)

This map, published by Alfredo Forcano Catalán, shows the railway network of Spain and Portugal in 1948.

This is the fourth edition of this type of map published by Alfredo Forcano Catalán during his lifetime. The first was in 1931, during the Second Spanish Republic. After the Spanish Civil War, the Spanish Geographical Cadastral Institute published new editions in 1943, 1945, 1948 (this one) and 1956.

The map groups together both lines that were in operation and those that were planned or under construction. The colours represent the different rail transport networks that existed in Spain and Portugal, with red for Spain and pink for Portugal representing the network under direct state administration. The other colours represent the many companies (around 100) that operated each of the lines throughout the territory. Details can be found in the legend at the bottom.
