This map, printed by the Spanish National Geographic Institute and published by Cartografía Santillana in 1980, depicts the physical geography of Spain.
The main sheet of the map, using a Lambert conformal conic projection, covers the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands (in an inset) and the territories of Ceuta and Melilla. In addition to elevation and depth data shown in the colours typically used on physical maps, the map also includes labels for the main mountain ranges and the courses of the major rivers, together with their names.
At the bottom, the sheet also includes four thematic maps, from left to right:
- A geological map of Spain’s soils.
- A map of river basins and rainfall in Spain.
- A climate map of Spain.
- A map of Spain’s vegetation and landscapes.
The collaboration between the Santillana publishing house and the National Geographic Institute reflects a model that was common in Spain during the Transition: the publishing house provided the distribution network within the school system, whilst the state cartographic agency ensured the accuracy of the printed material.
